Phases of a Coaching Relationship

Every coaching relationship has a similar lifecycle. Depending on the needs of coach and coachee a weekly or bi-weekly interval of coaching sessions will be most beneficial. Many coaches say that monthly meetings are too long – a lot of the positive and motivating momentum gets lost in between.

Coaches do not agree about how long the overall length of a coaching relationship should be. Some work only with tools like the Miracle and ask the client to become self-responsible after the 3rd session. Others prefer a timeframe of 6-12 months.

The coach needs to be aware that he will never see the result of his coaching. All the successes are hidden within the life of the coachee, from one session to the next. Therefore, a coach should not expect results during the session. His role is mainly to clarify and keep the focus.

Many professional coaches agree about these typical phases of a coaching relationship, even though they can develop differently:

  1. After first 2-3 sessions: First insights, quick success, motivation high
  2. After 3-4 months of a coaching relationship: negative peak, ground zero
  3. After 5-6 months: development of dream goals
